Sacred Birbhum · West Bengal
Tarapith is one of the most revered Shakti Peethas and tantric pilgrimage centres of India, nestled on the banks of the Dwarka River in Birbhum, West Bengal. The presiding deity, Maa Tara — the Mother Goddess in her fierce, compassionate form — has drawn saints, sages, and devotees for centuries. The great tantric saint Bamakhyapa attained divine realisation here, making Tarapith a living centre of tantric sadhana. Within a radius of 100–150 km lie several other sacred Sati Peethas and Shakti Peethas — each enshrining a part of the cosmic body of Goddess Sati, each radiating its own distinct spiritual energy.
The Divine Mother · Shakti Peetha
Maa Tara, worshipped in her Ugratara form, is depicted seated on Lord Shiva with wild hair, three eyes, and a fearsome yet motherly countenance. She holds a skull-cup, a sword, a severed head, and grants boons with her fourth hand. According to the Shakta tradition, Tarapith is the spot where the eye of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra dismembered her grief-stricken body. The deity here is a stone image in a Sadhana posture — nursing infant Shiva at her breast — symbolising the eternal, nurturing Mother Goddess. Thousands of devotees offer fish, meat, liquor and sweets as prasad, honouring the tantric traditions kept alive for millennia. The energy of Maa Tara at Tarapith is said to grant moksha, fearlessness and fulfilment of sincere prayers.
Shakti Peetha · Birbhum
The Tarapith Temple, dedicated to Goddess Tara, stands as one of Bengal's most powerful and mystical Shakti Peethas. The temple complex includes the sanctum of Maa Tara, the sacred Bamakhyapa Ashram, the cremation ground (Maha Smashan) — one of the holiest in Bengal — and the tranquil Dwarka River. The Maha Smashan beside the temple is a vital site for tantric sadhana. The atmosphere, especially at night, is charged with an otherworldly energy. The temple opens before dawn for the first Puja and remains vibrant throughout the day. Hotel Dwarkadhish is just a 3-minute walk from the temple gate.
Sacred shrines enshrining parts of Goddess Sati's divine body — all reachable on a pilgrimage circuit from Tarapith.
Nalhati, Birbhum · ~40 km from Tarapith
Nalhateswari (also written Nalahateswari) is a celebrated Shakti Peetha located in Nalhati town. According to the Shakta Peetha tradition, the throat (nala) of Goddess Sati fell at this spot, making it one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India. The presiding goddess is Kalika (in some traditions referred to as Nalhateswari), and the Bhairava is Yogesh. The temple is visited by a large number of devotees, particularly during Navaratri. The deity is revered for granting wishes, curing throat ailments, and bestowing blessings on devotees who come with sincere devotion. The vibrant energy of this Peetha complements a Tarapith pilgrimage beautifully.

Thousands of Vaishnavas and pilgrims visit Ekchakra, especially on Nityananda Trayodashi. The site also has the Dwarka River flowing nearby — adding a layer of sacred geography shared with Tarapith. A profoundly spiritual detour from any Birbhum pilgrimage.

Bakreshwar is one of the most significant Shakti Peethas in West Bengal, where the mind (mana) of Goddess Sati is said to have fallen. The presiding deity is Mahishamardini (Goddess Durga in her demon-slaying form), and the Bhairava is Vakranath. The temple sits above a cluster of natural hot springs of medicinal and spiritual value, making this a unique confluence of tantric energy and natural wonder. Devotees believe that a dip in the hot springs and darshan of Mahishamardini purifies the mind and soul. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas enumerated in the Shakta Peetha texts.
51 Shakti Peetha · Hot SpringsMurshidabad · ~90 km from Tarapith
Kiriteswari is a powerful Shakti Peetha located near Murshidabad, where the crown (kirita) of Goddess Sati fell to earth. The presiding goddess is Vimala (some texts say Kiriteswari), and the Bhairava is Sangbarta. The temple, set amidst a tranquil rural landscape on the banks of the Bhagirathi (Ganga), exudes an ancient, meditative energy. Devotees from across Bengal undertake pilgrimage here, especially during Navaratri and Durga Puja. Attahas (also known as Attahasa) is located in Labhpur, Birbhum — very close to Tarapith — and is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas where the lower lip (adharoshtham) of Goddess Sati fell. The presiding deity is Phullara, a serene and auspicious form of the Goddess, and the Bhairava is Vishwesh. The name "Attahas" literally means "the great laughter" — referring to Lord Shiva's laughter of grief as the body of Sati was dismembered.
